A former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has said
that former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will willingly accept
his (Makarfi’s) candidature if he emerged as the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP’s presidential flagbearer.
The former Vice President recently visited Makarfi after which he also visited former Jigawa state Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido.
Atiku had during the visit asked Lamido to step down for him.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Makarfi who was asked if
Atiku also asked him to step down for him said, “Nothing like that was
actually discussed, but I believe he is eminently qualified, he also
expressed that, that I am equally eminently qualified, but among several
qualified people, it is only one person that will emerge.
“So, I don’t have problem if he emerges, and I believe if I emerge,
he will willingly accept my candidature. Nobody made any specific
request during our meeting.
“That question never came up between us.
“We only discussed as Democrats, as people who started PDP together. There are lots at stake.
“We need to be comparing notes and working together in the interest of the country, democracy and our party.”
