Authorities in Marseille, southern France, have banned public gatherings and demonstrations following a weekend of violent protests, looting and destruction linked to rising living costs and dissatisfaction with public services across the country.
The restriction, announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, prohibits public gatherings and demonstrations across the city from noon until 8 p.m. local time as authorities move to prevent further violence.
The unrest erupted during nationwide demonstrations over the rising cost of living, deteriorating public services and concerns about conditions in schools. Although many protesters participated peacefully, separate groups engaged in clashes with police, vandalised businesses and looted shops in several cities.
Marseille was among the worst-affected areas, with masked groups reportedly targeting public buildings and commercial establishments. The official store of Olympique de Marseille, located on the city’s historic La Canebière avenue, was also looted and vandalised, prompting the football club to condemn the incident.
Similar scenes of destruction were reported in Paris, Lyon, Lille and other French cities, where shops and public infrastructure were damaged. Authorities deployed security personnel to restore order as emergency workers and business owners dealt with the aftermath.
French authorities reported more than 2,400 arrests following the unrest, while nearly 1,000 police officers were injured. The scale of the violence has raised questions about security preparations and the government’s response to the demonstrations.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has called for targeted, localised curfews in affected areas rather than a nationwide emergency, while President Emmanuel Macron has ordered a review of intelligence gathering and security arrangements.
The demonstrations have highlighted growing public frustration over economic pressures and the state of public services, placing additional pressure on the French government to address citizens’ concerns while restoring order.
