Amid a surge of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), governors elected under the PDP banner convened in Abuja on Sunday, May 11, to deliberate on the party’s future.
The meeting comes on the heels of a turbulent two weeks for the main opposition party, during which several high-profile members—most notably Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the PDP’s entire state structure—switched allegiance to the APC on April 23.
Their defection came barely a week after the governors met in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where they declared that they are interested in any coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP governors dissociated themselves from the coalition being spearheaded by their former presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Similarly, all three Senators from Kebbi State elected under the platform of PDP are also on their way to the APC.
Sources familiar with the development revealed that the emergency meeting was expected to take place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, barring any last-minute changes.
In addition to addressing the defections, the governors are expected to discuss matters related to the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27.
