Lagos-based influencer Papaya Ex (Abike Halima Raheem) has triggered renewed online reactions after sharing footage showing severe flash flooding in a residential area of Lekki during rainfall around 1pm in the 2026 rainy season.

The video captures water flowing heavily through streets and compounds, with visibly clogged drains and rapid urban development contributing to worsening runoff conditions in the area.

The post quickly generated widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing frustration over the situation, particularly given the high cost of living in the area, where some residents reportedly pay as much as ₦6 million annually for a single-bedroom apartment.

Others criticised what they described as inadequate drainage infrastructure, questioning how parts of one of Lagos’ most expensive residential districts continue to experience recurring flooding during heavy rainfall.

On the government side, drainage improvement efforts are reportedly being intensified in flood-prone communities such as Ikota, while residents have been urged to take responsibility by ensuring that local drains are kept clear of waste and blockages.

Despite the disruption, the flooding is often short-lived, with such flash floods in Lekki typically receding shortly after rainfall subsides.
