Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed the club is working to retain Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho following an impressive debut campaign in Scotland.

Iheanacho joined Celtic on a one-year contract in September last year, with the Scottish champions holding the option to extend his stay for a further 12 months.

The Nigerian forward played a crucial role during the 2025/26 season, helping Celtic clinch the Scottish Premiership title with a dramatic final-day victory over Hearts. He also scored in Celtic’s 3-1 triumph over Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup final.

Despite making only four league starts, Iheanacho scored five goals in 13 Premiership appearances and finished the season with nine goals across all competitions.

Speaking about the striker’s future, O’Neill said the club hopes to finalise a new agreement as soon as possible to allow Iheanacho to participate fully in pre-season preparations.

“I’d like to do something with him,” O’Neill said.

“If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him.

“It’s something he didn’t have last year. After about three minutes, he was injured against Sturm Graz, and he then hurt himself in the Scottish League Cup final as well.

“I would like to have him. It would be nice. I’m definitely pursuing that at this minute.”

The Celtic boss also revealed that the club is attempting to re-sign Marcelo Saracchi after the defender impressed during his loan spell from Boca Juniors.
