The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has clarified the purpose of her recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu following backlash over comments attributed to her on Nigeria’s economy.

In a post shared via her X handle, the WTO boss explained that her discussion with the President in Abuja centered on Nigeria’s economic reforms and the urgent need to build stronger social safety nets to cushion the effects of hardship and hunger across the country.

She acknowledged that Nigerians were experiencing significant difficulties as a result of the reforms and stressed the importance of putting in place programs that would help poor and vulnerable citizens cope with the challenges.

Her clarification comes after she was heavily criticized online for reportedly stating that President Tinubu had “stabilized” Nigeria’s economy.
