The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered underground tunnels at a heavily fortified suspected drug hideout in Asaba, Delta State, raising concerns over possible links to other criminal activities, including kidnapping.
The discovery was made on Monday, October 12, 2026, at a property located at Fallingwater Colehouse, Yahweh Close, off Akara Junction, along the 74 Junction–Asaba Specialist Hospital axis.
The NSCDC Delta State Command spokesperson, DSC Anthony Akachukwu, said operatives spent three days attempting to gain access to the building before eventually using a blowtorch to break through the roof. Upon entry, they discovered several layers of reinforced iron doors and underground passages allegedly used by suspects to escape during security operations.
According to Akachukwu, several suspects escaped during the raid, prompting further investigations into the purpose of the tunnels and whether the facility was used for criminal activities beyond drug dealing. However, he stressed that no link to kidnapping had been established.
Items recovered from the premises included substances locally known as “Loud” and “Ice”, as well as PVC gum and other materials suspected to be associated with the alleged drug trade. A man identified as Yakubu was also arrested after allegedly arriving at the location to purchase drugs and negotiating with an operative he reportedly mistook for a worker at the outlet.
The command is also examining a notebook reportedly recovered from the property, which allegedly contains entries suggesting payments to security personnel. The NSCDC has not identified any individuals or agencies allegedly mentioned in the document, while its contents and authenticity remain unverified.
Akachukwu said investigations were ongoing to establish ownership of the property, identify those behind the suspected operation and determine the purpose of the underground tunnels. He added that the location would remain under surveillance as efforts continued to apprehend those who escaped and gather evidence for possible prosecution.
The NSCDC urged the public to remain vigilant and assured that further action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. Allegations against the suspects and claims involving possible payments to security personnel remain subject to investigation and proof before a court of law.
