The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to allegations made by former Super Eagles defender Taribo West that the late goalkeeper Peter Rufai was abandoned by football authorities during his burial.

A viral video on Friday showed West lashing out at the NFF and the Lagos State Government, accusing them of neglect and forcing Rufai’s family to seek financial assistance for the burial. He described the situation as “madness” and vowed never to allow his son to play for Nigeria, citing the plight of past football legends such as Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha, and Yisa Sofoluwe.

“This hero, this soldier, this football evangelist had to be treated this way and his family. Could you imagine that the family would be crying just to solicit even within our group to ask for money? That’s madness,” Taribo said emotionally, recalling how Rufai’s passing shook him more than the deaths of his own parents.

In its reaction, the NFF insisted it did not neglect the former goalkeeper. In a statement shared on X, the federation said it provided financial assistance to the families of Rufai and another late football icon, Christian Chukwu, and sent delegations to both burials.

“In support of the burial rites of Christian Chukwu, the NFF provided financial assistance to his family, and was represented by Executive Committee Member Chief George Aluo, Barr. Okey Obi, and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi. Similarly, at the funeral mass of Peter Rufai in Lagos, the NFF also offered financial support to his family. The delegation included Executive Committee Member Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and Dr. Ademola Olajire,” the statement read.

The federation stressed that it “stood in solidarity with the families of the two icons, honoured their service, celebrated their legacy, and extended continued support to their families.”

The controversy has reignited debate over how Nigeria treats its sporting heroes, with many calling for stronger welfare structures for former internationals who served the nation.
