Multiple explosions struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening, causing widespread panic and loss of life. The blasts, described by residents as loud and sudden, occurred at about 7:24 p.m. across major areas of the city, including the Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Kaleri, the Post Office Flyover, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) confirmed that 23 people died and 108 others were injured in what authorities described as coordinated suicide attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Preliminary investigations indicated that the attackers targeted crowded and strategic locations to inflict maximum casualties and disrupt socio-economic activities.

Following the explosions, police tactical units, military personnel, and other security operatives were deployed to secure affected sites, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted sweeps to prevent further incidents. The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes, commiserated with victims and families, and announced enhanced security measures across the state.

Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), assisted in evacuating victims, who were transported to hospitals in Maiduguri for treatment. Authorities continue to work to restore normalcy, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

The police commended the cooperation and resilience of residents while reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
