Ghanaian-American comedian and actor Michael Blackson has appealed for unity among African nations following a wave of online criticism directed at South Africa after its 2026 FIFA World Cup opening defeat.
Blackson’s comments came after South Africa lost 2-0 to Mexico in their opening group match, a result that triggered heavy trolling and mockery on social media platforms.
The backlash, however, has unfolded against a sensitive backdrop, including recent reports of xenophobic violence in South Africa that affected migrants from several African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, forcing some to return home.
In response, Blackson urged Africans to avoid deepening divisions, calling instead for peace, solidarity, and mutual respect across the continent.
He stressed that African nations should support one another despite sporting rivalries or political tensions, especially during global events like the World Cup.
The message has since circulated widely online, with many users debating the importance of unity versus ongoing regional frustrations.
