Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a sharp increase in the salaries of security guards at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, raising their monthly pay from N18,800 to N80,000.

The decision followed an interactive session during the governor’s visit to the hospital on September 30, where one of the guards lamented their poor welfare, revealing that they earned less than N20,000 despite having families to cater for.

“We are suffering. I have a family with three children. Please help us,” the guard pleaded, prompting the governor to inquire about their pay.

A hospital official explained that the guards were not direct staff of the hospital, as security services had been outsourced to a private company, which paid each guard N27,000 while the guards themselves received only N18,800.

In response, Governor Makinde immediately directed that all 67 guards be absorbed as ad hoc workers of the institution and placed on a new salary of N80,000 monthly, effective October 1.
