The Lagos State Police Command has identified and commenced disciplinary action against an inspector featured in a viral video making controversial political and ethnic remarks about 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Igbo people.
The officer was identified as Inspector Osumah Frank, who was filmed while travelling in a public transport vehicle in Lagos.
In the video circulating on social media, Frank was heard making comments about Obi’s presidential ambition and questioning the possibility of an Igbo person becoming President of Nigeria.
He also made remarks concerning President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, while suggesting that police officers could be influenced financially to frustrate a political candidate’s chances.
Reacting to the video, the Lagos Police Command described the remarks as “careless, inappropriate and uncultured” and said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the officer in line with established police regulations.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, stressed that the comments were made in Frank’s personal capacity and did not represent the official position or views of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated that police personnel are expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public.
Fatai also said wearing the police uniform carries a responsibility to protect the dignity and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command stated that it would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the police.
The development followed widespread reactions to the video, which began circulating on social media around September 23.
The police have not disclosed the specific disciplinary measures that will be taken against Inspector Frank as the proceedings continue.
