Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he will not engage in personal attacks against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that he respects the office of the President.
Obi made the remarks on Friday, September 25, at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, where he spoke on political discourse, accountability and leadership.
The former Anambra State governor said political disagreements should focus on policies and the performance of public officials rather than personal insults.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody,” Obi said.
He added that he would not personally insult Tinubu, saying the President deserves respect because of the office he occupies.
Obi, however, stressed that respecting public officials does not prevent citizens or journalists from questioning their decisions and assessing their performance.
He said political leaders should be examined based on their records, statements and qualifications, rather than through personal attacks.
According to Obi, the conduct of political leaders also influences the values of the wider society, making it important for those in public office to demonstrate the standards they expect from citizens.
His comments came amid ongoing political debates ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi expected to contest the presidential election under the NDC.
The former governor urged the media to continue scrutinising political leaders and holding them accountable while keeping public discussions focused on issues affecting Nigerians.
