Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commenced the disbursement of ₦50,000 monthly empowerment support to 5,800 women across the state’s 44 local government areas.
The initiative, implemented under the Monthly Women’s Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme, is aimed at reducing poverty, supporting small-scale businesses and improving household incomes.
Speaking at the inauguration of the programme on Monday at the Government House, Kano, Governor Yusuf said the intervention was part of his administration’s efforts to promote women’s economic participation and improve livelihoods.
He said the beneficiaries had been selected from all 44 local government areas, while committees overseeing the programme at the local level would commence distribution of the funds following the inauguration.
Yusuf assured the beneficiaries that funds had been secured to sustain the monthly payments through December 2026 without interruption.
The governor urged the women to make productive use of the financial support by investing in viable small businesses that could generate income and improve their economic independence.
He said the monthly empowerment programme had been sustained since the beginning of his administration, with thousands of women already benefiting from the scheme.
The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader poverty-reduction and empowerment programmes, which the governor said were designed to enable beneficiaries to contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Mariya Bunkure, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, commended the Kano State Government for its continued investment in women’s empowerment.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilise the support effectively to strengthen their families and contribute to the development of their communities.
The event was attended by the Kano State Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo; traditional rulers; political stakeholders; government officials; and representatives of women from the 44 local government areas.
The Kano State Government has previously said the programme is intended to promote self-reliance, strengthen household incomes and stimulate grassroots economic activity.
