INEC Sets September 19 for Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye By-Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled Saturday, September 19, 2026, for a by-election in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency following the death of the lawmaker representing the constituency.

The commission said the election would be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and relevant electoral laws.

According to INEC, the by-election will cover 903 polling units across three Local Government Areas, with the commission assuring stakeholders of a transparent, fair and credible process.

Election Timetable

INEC released the following schedule for the conduct of the election:

  • August 20, 2026: Formal notice of the election
  • August 25, 2026: Deadline for political parties to conduct primaries and nominate candidates
  • September 8, 2026: Publication of the final list of candidates
  • September 9, 2026: Commencement of campaign activities
  • September 17, 2026: End of campaigns
  • September 19, 2026: Election day

The commission urged all political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the timetable and comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.

INEC assured voters, political parties and other stakeholders that it was fully prepared to conduct the by-election and provide a level playing field for all participating candidates.

The commission also reiterated its commitment to ensuring that voters across the constituency are given a genuine opportunity to freely choose their representatives.
