Gunmen have killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and abducted a businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed to curb recurring attacks in the area.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, when the armed men reportedly invaded the community and abducted a businessman identified as Gilbert, who deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser.
According to community sources, the gunmen encountered the NSCDC officer, a Deputy Superintendent identified as Distu Garba Audu, popularly known as Tony, as he rode his motorcycle near his residence.
The officer’s motorcycle headlight reportedly exposed the attackers’ movement as they fled with their captive, prompting them to open fire on him at close range. He died at the scene.
A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, said the incident had heightened fear among residents, who have continued to experience attacks despite the curfew. He appealed to the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security in Pushit and surrounding communities and ensure the safe release of the abducted businessman.
Another resident reportedly said he narrowly escaped being hit by a stray bullet during the attack, adding that he later saw the officer lying in a pool of blood.
The killing has renewed concerns about the effectiveness of the curfew imposed in parts of Plateau State following repeated security incidents. Residents have called for increased security presence and urgent action to prevent further attacks.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the incident and pursue the perpetrators, while efforts to secure the release of the abducted businessman remain a priority.
