A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, for facilitating the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a customer’s bank account.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that the judgment was delivered by Justice Ismail Ijelu on Monday, October 19, 2026, following a full trial.
According to the commission, investigations revealed that Nweke, on June 21, 2025, accessed a desktop computer assigned to a staff member, Emmanuella Anyanwu, without lawful authority. The action allegedly facilitated the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from an account belonging to Leelee Dumbari.
Nweke was prosecuted by the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 on a one-count charge of unlawful withdrawal, contrary to Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, leading to a full trial during which the prosecution, led by counsel M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses, while the defence presented one witness.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty as charged and ordered him to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days. The court ruled that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated period would result in his being remanded in a correctional centre for six months.
The conviction underscores ongoing efforts by the EFCC to prosecute financial crimes and hold individuals accountable for the unlawful handling of customers’ funds.
The commission reiterated its commitment to tackling financial misconduct and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s banking system.
