The Ogun State Police Command has rescued 11 Ghanaian nationals allegedly held against their will in Sagamu after being lured to Nigeria with promises of Canadian and Spanish visas.
The victims, comprising seven men and four women, were rescued by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following intelligence received on October 19, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said preliminary investigations indicated that the victims were allegedly deceived by a fellow Ghanaian national who promised to facilitate their travel abroad.
According to the police, each victim reportedly paid GH₵40,000 before being brought to Nigeria and subsequently held against their will. The alleged fraud was valued at approximately ₦50.27 million.
The police said the victims had been rescued and were receiving appropriate care and support, while detectives continued efforts to track down and arrest all those suspected of being involved in the alleged criminal network.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its prompt response and professionalism.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating transnational crime and protecting residents and visitors from criminal networks that exploit people seeking opportunities abroad.
The police commissioner assured the public that efforts would continue until those responsible were brought to justice.
The command also urged members of the public to verify overseas travel and visa-processing arrangements before making payments and to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
The incident highlights the risks associated with fraudulent overseas travel schemes, in which unsuspecting individuals are promised visas and opportunities abroad before allegedly becoming victims of fraud and unlawful detention.
