Governor Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for confirmation as Deputy Governor of Kano State.
The nomination was disclosed on Wednesday in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, who said the move is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy in the event of a vacancy.
The deputy governorship position became vacant following the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
According to the statement, the governor’s decision followed wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state, and he has requested the Assembly’s approval to complete the process.
Muhammad described Garo as an experienced political administrator with over two decades of service in both elective and appointive positions.
The 48-year-old politician has previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also held office as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State.
Garo was also the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.
The state government said the nomination is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and ensure continuity in effective service delivery.
