A fire on Sunday morning gutted the SAO petroleum station in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying a petroleum tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and two underground tanks.
Daily Post reported that several other properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed during the inferno.
The incident was confirmed on Monday by the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, who stated that the fire was brought under control after several hours of intense firefighting.
Akinwande explained that the fire service, working alongside the Federal Fire Service and fire teams from private companies, responded promptly to the scene.
He added that police officers from the Eleyele police headquarters provided security cover during the operation.
“Upon arrival, we met a MACK trailer tanker loaded with 45,000 litres capacity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and two underground tanks engulfed by fire,” he said.
“Our officers swiftly got into action, launched articulated attacks and used professional technical know-how with the aid of foam chemical compound to curtail the fire from resulting in a serious inferno,” he added.
The firefighting operation lasted several hours before the blaze was fully extinguished. The response team included the Federal Fire Service, SWEETCO Fire Brigade, Zartech Fire Brigade, and CBN Fire Brigade.
