A man accused of fatally shooting a woman in Amakama, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, has been found dead in a nearby bush, days after fleeing the community.
The suspect, identified as Chinedu Anamelechi, a local vigilante member, was discovered lifeless on Saturday, April 18, following a manhunt launched by community youths and security operatives after the incident last Wednesday.
According to residents of Amakama, Anamelechi allegedly fled after shooting a woman, identified as Ezinne Ariwodo. He is also accused of injuring others during the attack, including a youth who reportedly attempted to intervene and another woman who sustained stab wounds.
While authorities are yet to officially confirm the cause of his death, some community members believe the suspect may have taken his own life to avoid arrest and possible prosecution.
The Abia State Police Command had earlier confirmed recovering the body of the deceased woman and rescuing those injured in the incident. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
