The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has reacted ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying clash against South Africa, scheduled to be played today in South Africa.

In a post on X, the world football governing body outlined scenarios that could see teams book early tickets to the tournament.

The statement read: “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today! Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”

South Africa currently top Group C with 16 points—six points clear of the Super Eagles. A win against Nigeria could guarantee their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

However, FIFA is yet to give a ruling on a separate controversy involving South Africa. In March, Bafana Bafana fielded Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho, despite the midfielder being due to serve a suspension after receiving two yellow cards.

Lesotho has since lodged a protest, demanding that South Africa be docked three points and the match overturned to a 3-0 defeat.
