Enugu Police Order Probe After Suspect Dies in Struggle During Hotel Raid

The Enugu State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into the death of a man identified as Nnaji Izuchukwu during an intelligence-led operation by police operatives in Enugu.

Nnaji, popularly known as Stone, reportedly sustained fatal gunshot injuries during a raid by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Section of the Violent Crime Response Unit at Bull Hotel, Asata, Enugu.

According to the police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the operation targeted Nworie Chidera Kelvin, also known as Akidi, an alleged drug dealer and suspected member of the Vikings Confraternity, who was reportedly linked to cases involving cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.

The operation led to the arrest of Akidi and nine other suspects, comprising males and females aged between 17 and 28. Police also reportedly recovered suspected cannabis, a weighing scale believed to be used for measuring illicit drugs, and ₦43,400 in cash.

Ndukwe said Nnaji and another suspect allegedly jumped through a window while attempting to escape during the raid. According to the police account, the two men subsequently confronted an operative and allegedly attempted to disarm him, leading to a struggle during which the officer’s firearm discharged.

Nnaji was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead, while the other suspect reportedly escaped. His remains were deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Intelligence Department to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether the operation and use of firearms complied with established procedures and applicable laws.

The commissioner assured the deceased’s family and associates that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action. He also urged members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

The police account comes amid public concern over Nnaji’s death, with reports indicating that youths had protested the incident and demanded accountability from the authorities.
