Aliyu Gebi, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been arrested and later granted bail by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of sharing misleading security intelligence with foreign embassies.

Gebi, who served in the 7th National Assembly and now works as a security consultant, was reportedly detained on April 3. Although he has been released on bail, he remains under investigation and is required to report regularly to DSS headquarters.

Security sources say he is suspected of distributing intelligence reports to foreign missions that were later considered deceptive, raising concerns among international stakeholders, particularly in the aviation sector. The reports allegedly influenced decisions such as flight cancellations by Lufthansa and nearly prompted similar action by British Airways.

The intelligence was also linked to a travel advisory issued by the United States Department of State, which warned of security risks in parts of Nigeria and advised caution for travellers.

However, the Nigerian government rejected aspects of the advisory, urging foreign partners to ensure their security assessments are balanced, up-to-date, and reflective of ongoing improvements. Diplomatic engagements were said to have eased tensions, with some embassies reportedly shelving initial plans based on the reports.
