San Francisco police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a Molotov cocktail attack at the residence of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, as well as threats made outside the company’s headquarters. The early Friday morning incident signals a troubling escalation in tensions surrounding the artificial intelligence industry.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, an unidentified male suspect threw an incendiary device at a home in the North Beach area at about 4:12 a.m. before fleeing the scene on foot. The individual was apprehended approximately an hour later after authorities received reports of a man allegedly threatening to set another building on fire. Officers who responded to the residence discovered evidence linking the suspect to the earlier attack.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that no injuries were recorded and commended the swift response of law enforcement. The company added that it is cooperating fully with investigators as inquiries continue. While officials have yet to determine a motive, the incident comes amid growing scrutiny of the AI firm.

OpenAI has recently faced backlash over its collaboration with the U.S. government, particularly regarding the use of its technology in classified military operations. The move into defense-related work has drawn criticism from some quarters, especially following tensions involving rival firm Anthropic and U.S. authorities. Public opinion on artificial intelligence remains divided, with recent surveys indicating a decline in overall support for the technology.

Altman addressed the incident in a blog post later on Friday, acknowledging that concerns about AI development are often rooted in genuine fears about its impact. However, he urged for a more measured approach to public discourse.

“While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally,” he said.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have not yet disclosed the individual’s identity or any formal charges.
