Canadian rapper Drake has won more than $1 million after successfully betting on Canada to defeat South Africa in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.
The Toronto-born music star had staked $770,000 (over N1 billion) on a Canadian victory, with the wager carrying a potential payout of $1,001,000.
Canada secured the bet with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa, courtesy of Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time winner, sending the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16.
With the result, Drake walked away with a payout of $1,001,000, earning an estimated profit of about $231,000.
Ahead of the match, the Grammy-winning rapper revealed that he had increased the size of his wager after receiving a playful message from renowned South African DJ Black Coffee.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise the STAKES,” Drake wrote alongside a screenshot of the bet shared on social media.
Drake is well known for placing high-profile sports wagers and frequently shares his bets with fans online. Over the years, he has gambled on a wide range of sporting events, including the NBA Finals, UFC title fights, boxing bouts and major international football tournaments.
The successful wager adds another notable win to the rapper’s long-running sports betting history.
