CPPE Raises Concern Over Rising Food Prices Despite Inflation Decline

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has expressed concern that food prices continue to rise despite Nigeria recording a fourth consecutive drop in headline inflation in July 2025.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), headline inflation eased to 21.88 percent in July from 22.22 percent in June.

In a statement issued on Sunday, CPPE Director, Muda Yusuf, said the latest figures reflect a gradually stabilising macroeconomic environment, supported by exchange rate stability and improved investor confidence.

However, the think tank noted that “pressures persist” on the economy, stressing that food inflation and month-on-month price increases remain worrisome.

“The July 2025 inflation report provides a basis for cautious optimism. While progress has been made in moderating headline and core inflation, the persistence of food and month-on-month price increases highlights unresolved structural weaknesses,” CPPE stated.

The organisation urged a coordinated mix of monetary, fiscal, and structural policies to consolidate recent gains and ensure sustained economic stability. It also advised the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to adopt more innovative approaches to managing liquidity beyond conventional tools like the interest rate, currently at 27.5 percent, and cash reserve ratios.
