The Senior Pastor of the Universal Reformed Christian Church (NKST), Andyar Ishan Classis, Saghev Council Ward in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Rev. Samuel Gbinde, has died days after regaining his freedom from kidnappers.

The cleric was reportedly abducted about two weeks ago alongside two members of his congregation. The victims were later released after a ransom was allegedly paid.

According to sources within the church, Rev. Gbinde sustained severe injuries during his captivity and died a few days after his release despite receiving medical treatment.

A church member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the pastor was subjected to brutal torture while in the custody of his abductors.

“After his release, Reverend Gbinde was rushed to the mission hospital in Gboko because he was in a very critical condition. He had been badly beaten and tortured during his captivity. Despite the efforts of medical personnel in Gboko and later Makurdi to save his life, he passed away a few days later,” the source said.

The pastor’s death has thrown members of the NKST Church and residents of Guma Local Government Area into mourning.

Reacting to the development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Benue North-West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Eunice Ortom, described the cleric’s death as a painful loss to the church, his community and Benue State.

In a condolence message, Dr. Ortom said Rev. Gbinde dedicated his life to serving God and humanity with compassion, commitment and integrity.

“Rev. Dr. Samuel Gbinde was a devoted servant of God whose life was defined by selfless service, compassion and unwavering commitment to the spiritual and moral well-being of his community. His death is a painful loss not only to the NKST family but also to Guma Local Government Area and Benue State as a whole,” she said.

She extended her condolences to the deceased’s family, the Andyar Ishan Classis, the NKST Church, and the entire Christian community, praying for strength and comfort for all those affected by the loss.
