Arne Slot has spoken publicly for the first time after being sacked as manager of Liverpool FC, just one year after leading the club to a Premier League title.
Liverpool endured a disappointing title defence campaign, finishing fifth in the league and falling short of expectations following their earlier success. Despite mounting pressure due to inconsistent performances, Slot had reportedly retained backing from the club’s hierarchy until the end of the season.
In an emotional open letter to supporters, Slot reflected on his time at Anfield, describing the weight of expectation that comes with managing the club.
“You walk out under that famous sign in the Anfield tunnel, and you feel a mix of emotions,” he wrote, citing responsibility to the club’s history, expectation to deliver success, and determination to compete at the highest level.
He noted that winning the Premier League title within 12 months was a “special” achievement, describing it as a reward for the “hard work, sacrifice and commitment” across the club.
Slot also praised Liverpool fans for their role in the triumph, saying the celebrations with supporters made the experience “unforgettable.”
The Dutch coach further reflected on difficult moments during his tenure, paying tribute to the resilience and unity of the Liverpool community, and acknowledging the emotional impact of events that affected the club and city.
He also honoured former teammate Diogo Jota, describing him as “a friend and an incredible human being who touched the lives of thousands every time he wore this club’s crest.”
Slot thanked players, staff, club leadership, and supporters for their contributions during his time at Liverpool, expressing confidence in the club’s future.
“Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us,” he wrote, adding that although change is part of football, the club would continue to make its supporters proud.
He concluded by reflecting on his journey at Anfield, saying he leaves knowing the team “never stopped striving” for success.
