Argentina have booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final played on Wednesday at Atlanta Stadium.
The defending champions showed their resilience once again, overturning a second-half deficit to secure victory and move within one win of retaining the World Cup title.
England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who gave the Three Lions hope of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.
However, Argentina responded strongly, with Enzo Fernández restoring parity 30 minutes later before Lautaro MartÃnez headed home the dramatic winner in stoppage time from a pinpoint cross by captain Lionel Messi.
The victory sends Lionel Scaloni’s men into Sunday’s final, where they will face Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the other semi-final to secure their place in the tournament’s showpiece.
England will now take on France in the third-place playoff.
Argentina head into the final full of confidence as they bid to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup trophy they won in Qatar in 2022 and claim a fourth world title.
