Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have launched a manhunt for suspected gunmen following the killing of a community security guard in Gwom Village, Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, when troops of Sector 6, Operation SAFE HAVEN, responded to reports of an attack on the community.

According to security sources, the troops arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of the victim, identified as Markus Musa, who was reportedly on sentry duty when he was attacked by the gunmen.

A search of the area led to the recovery of two empty 7.62mm NATO ammunition casings and two disintegrated metallic ammunition links, suggesting that the attackers used high-calibre firearms during the assault.

Community members subsequently evacuated the victim’s body for burial in accordance with local customs.

Security sources said troops have since intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the attack, while patrols have been reinforced across the area to prevent further incidents and reassure residents.

The latest incident adds to the security challenges facing parts of Riyom Local Government Area, where security agencies have continued operations aimed at curbing attacks and restoring peace.
