Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, describing them as politically motivated and aimed at influencing the 2027 elections.
Gumi made the remark in a statement shared on his Facebook page while reacting to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians.
According to Gumi, the move was fueled by the actions of “unpatriotic bigot clerics” aiding foreign powers to divide Nigeria under the guise of human rights advocacy.
“Nigeria is under their evil eye of religious bigotry,” he wrote. “We have many unpatriotic bigot clerics aiding imperialists to divide us further so that they can pillage our resources. Otherwise, what can they even do?”
He questioned America’s interest in Nigeria’s internal affairs, saying, “At a time when Americans are lining up for food rations, what concerns them with our internal problems? All the bluff is about 2027.”
The cleric also called for a review of Nigeria’s foreign policy, urging the government to identify and address what he described as “external manipulation and internal betrayal” contributing to the nation’s insecurity.
