The Akwa Ibom State Government has paid over ₦90 billion out of the ₦111 billion in inherited gratuity liabilities owed to retired public servants.
The state Head of Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, disclosed this on Monday in Uyo during a media parley to mark the commencement of the 2026 Public Service Day celebration.
Peters said the payment was part of the measures introduced by Governor Umo Eno’s administration to improve workers’ welfare and address inherited obligations to retirees.
She said about ₦21 billion remains outstanding, adding that the government was committed to progressively clearing the balance.
The Head of Service also disclosed that the administration had recruited or approved the recruitment of approximately 7,069 personnel, including 4,000 general workers, 1,000 primary school teachers and 766 health workers and other critical staff.
She further highlighted other welfare measures, including the implementation of the ₦80,000 minimum wage, payment of a 13th-month salary known as “Eno-Mber” and the allocation of 150 completed two-bedroom expandable houses to civil servants through a raffle process.
