The Abia State Police Command has dismissed a viral report alleging that 488 Boko Haram members were arrested in the state, describing the claim as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the command clarified that the video being circulated alongside the claim is outdated.

According to the police, the footage is from a broadcast recorded over 11 years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Abia State.

The command warned that the report was deliberately crafted to incite fear and panic among residents, urging the public to disregard such misinformation.

“As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension,” the statement read.

The police further called on the public to support security efforts by avoiding the spread of fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources of information.

Commissioner Isa also cautioned that individuals found guilty of spreading false information would face legal consequences under relevant laws, including the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace by rejecting unverified reports.
