Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed at the plastic
section of Potiskum market, Yobe State following a night fire outbreak
break.
The incident occurred at about 10 pm on Thursday when the market was closed for business activities.
According to eyewitness’ accounts, electrical fault was suspected to
be the causative agent of the inferno where six shops loaded with
plastic and other related material melted to ashes.
Chairman of the market, Bawo Mohammed told DAILY POST that it took
the combined efforts of personnel of State Fire Service, who mobilised
to the scene of the incident plus good samaritans to put out the fire,
hence, prevented further escalation.
“Our appeal goes to Potiskum Local Government and the State Emergency
Management Agency (SEMA) to come to the aid of the affected members by
providing the much needed support in order to start their businesses
again”, visibly disturbed Mohammed appealed.
No casualty and lose of life recorded, but the damage was incalculable.
Potiskum main market in Yobe state has continued to experience
economic set backs following series of fire disasters at short intervals
in recent times.
