At least 17 people have been reported dead following a fresh attack on a community in Benue State.

The incident occurred in Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area, on Sunday, April 5, the same day residents were observing Easter, according to Premium Times.

Local sources said gunmen stormed the community without warning and opened fire on villagers, killing several people.

Residents also reported that houses were set ablaze during the ആക്രമ, forcing many to flee into nearby bushes for safety, while several others remain missing as search efforts continue.

“This is heartbreaking. People were caught unawares. Many are still missing,” a resident said.

The latest incident has heightened concerns over recurring violence in parts of Benue, particularly in rural farming communities.

Reacting, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, describing the attack as “heinous” and unacceptable.

In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed sympathy to affected families and assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice.

He also pointed to what he described as a pattern of targeted attacks in parts of the state and pledged stronger security measures.

The governor commended security agencies for their response and urged them to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.

Sunday’s attack echoes a similar incident in April 2018, when suspected herders attacked a Catholic church in Mbalom, killing two priests and several worshippers during a morning service.

Repeated attacks across Benue State continue to disrupt lives and livelihoods, particularly in agrarian communities, as authorities say investigations are ongoing and efforts have begun to track down those responsible.
