Former US President Donald Trump has warned Republican lawmakers that failing to secure victories in the 2026 congressional midterm elections could prompt Democrats to pursue renewed impeachment efforts against him.

Speaking Tuesday at a Republican retreat in Washington, Trump told party members:

“You gotta win the midterms ’cause if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be… they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”

Trump cautioned that losing control of Congress would stall his legislative agenda and expose his administration to investigations. He urged Republicans to set aside internal divisions and focus on winning elections. Noting the party’s narrow majority in the House of Representatives, he said Speaker Mike Johnson has limited authority:

“You can’t be tough when you have a majority of three,” he said.

Trump encouraged party members to campaign on Republican policies regarding gender issues, healthcare, election integrity, and the stock market, while briefly blaming Democrats for inflation. He also downplayed the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by his supporters, which Democrats marked as the fifth anniversary of the riot.

In an unscripted speech lasting over an hour, Trump repeated claims disputed by official records, including assertions that Washington recorded no homicides for months, and predicted Republicans would achieve an “epic midterm victory.” He urged flexibility on divisive issues such as Obamacare subsidies and the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortion, telling lawmakers:

“All of these issues are very important issues, but you can own healthcare. Figure it out.”

Every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be contested in November 2026. Historically, incumbent presidents often lose House seats in midterm elections, though Trump was impeached twice during his first term and acquitted both times.

“I got impeached twice on nothing,” he said.

Some House Democrats have already introduced articles of impeachment targeting Trump’s second term, allegations that the White House has denied.
