The White House on Friday, October 10, sharply criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, bypassing U.S. President Donald Trump.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” said White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung in a post on X. “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
Since returning to office for his second term in January, President Trump has repeatedly argued that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for what he describes as his efforts to resolve several global conflicts — claims many observers consider exaggerated.
On the eve of the announcement, Trump again maintained that his role in brokering the first phase of a ceasefire in Gaza this week marked the eighth war he had helped end. “Whatever they do is fine,” he added. “I didn’t do it for that — I did it because I’ve saved a lot of lives.”
Nobel experts in Oslo had, however, dismissed the possibility of Trump being selected, saying his “America First” approach runs contrary to the principles of peace and international cooperation outlined in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will.
