A brief video showing Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Odumegwu-Ojukwu, visibly reacting with admiration to urban infrastructure in Seoul has generated widespread debate among Nigerians, with many drawing comparisons between South Korea’s development and conditions at home.

The minister, appointed in late April 2026, was in South Korea for the Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where Seoul pledged $10 billion in development finance and $14 billion in export support to African countries by 2030.

Although the visit carried significant diplomatic and economic weight, attention shifted to a 13-second clip showing her apparent amazement at Seoul’s infrastructure, which quickly circulated online.

Some critics argued that the reaction was insensitive, saying senior officials should focus on replicating such development standards in Nigeria rather than expressing admiration abroad.

Others defended her, describing the moment as a natural and aspirational response that highlights the stark contrast between infrastructure in South Korea and Nigeria.

Commentators also referenced South Korea’s development trajectory, noting its transformation from a low-income nation in the 1960s to a global economic powerhouse as evidence that similar progress remains possible for Nigeria with sustained policy commitment and effective governance.
