US Mission Warns Nigerians That Visa Holders Can Still Be Denied Entry

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerians seeking to travel to the US that possessing a valid American visa does not automatically guarantee entry into the country.

The mission issued the clarification on Monday, October 19, in a post on its official X account, explaining that a visa only allows a traveller to arrive at a US port of entry and request admission.

“When you arrive, U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether you may enter,” the mission stated, urging travellers to understand the distinction between obtaining a visa and being permitted to enter the country.

According to the US Department of State, immigration officers at the port of entry have the authority to approve or deny admission, even when a traveller holds a valid visa.

The reminder comes amid increased attention to US visa and immigration policies affecting Nigerians. Travellers are advised to ensure their documents are valid, answer questions truthfully and ensure their intended activities are consistent with the type of visa they hold.

The mission has also urged visa applicants to rely on official US government channels for accurate information and to be cautious of agents who promise guaranteed visa approvals or entry.

The US authorities reiterated that a visa should not be regarded as an assurance of admission, as the final decision rests with immigration officials when the traveller arrives at the border.
