The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salaries of its members.
The industrial action began on Monday, September 7, following a resolution by the union’s branch congress directing members to withdraw their academic and administrative services until the outstanding salaries are fully paid.
In a statement jointly signed by the ASUU-UNIZIK Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said the action was in compliance with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries.
According to the union, the NEC resolution empowers ASUU branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
ASUU-UNIZIK said that as of September 7, the university had not paid its members their complete August salaries, adding that the situation had occurred more than three times and had become frustrating for its members.
The union said the incomplete payment of the August salary was the sole reason for the strike and appealed to the university authorities and the Visitor to the institution, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene.
It directed all members to immediately suspend academic and administrative duties, stressing that the withdrawal of services would continue until all affected lecturers receive their full August salaries.
The development could affect teaching, examinations and other academic activities at the university if the dispute persists.
However, when contacted, the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the development.
The strike comes amid wider concerns by ASUU over outstanding salary-related entitlements and funding challenges affecting Nigerian universities.
