The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has placed an indefinite ban on all forms of “signing-out” celebrations by final-year students.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, on Tuesday, comes after repeated incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption linked to the activities.
“The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University wishes to inform all students that, with immediate effect, all forms of signing-off related to final examinations are banned on campus. This step was taken in response to recurring incidents of disorder and disruption associated with such events,” the statement partly read.
The university expressed concern over the influx of unauthorised persons who often infiltrate the campus during the celebrations, describing it as a major security threat to staff and students.
Dr. Okeke warned that any student caught violating the directive would face strict disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. She added that outsiders who attempt to participate may be arrested and prosecuted for disorderly conduct.
Reassuring the academic community, the Registrar stressed that UNIZIK remains committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and would not condone any acts capable of undermining peace and order.
“All students are advised to focus on their academic responsibilities and promptly report any threats to safety or misconduct to the appropriate authorities,” the statement concluded.
