The United States government has warned that it may cut off all aid and assistance to Nigeria if President Bola Tinubu’s administration fails to stop the reported killings of Christians across the country.
Speaking during a press briefing at the White House, the U.S. Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said Washington is deeply concerned about what it described as ongoing religiously motivated violence in parts of Nigeria.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killings of Christians, the United States will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may take action to wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Leavitt stated.
The remarks have drawn global attention, coming amid growing international concern over religious violence and insecurity in Nigeria.
Washington’s warning also echoes previous calls by rights groups urging the Nigerian government to take stronger steps to protect vulnerable communities and bring perpetrators of violence to justice.
As of press time, the Nigerian government has not issued an official response to the U.S. statement.
