United States President Donald Trump has renewed his proposal to change the name of the state of New Mexico to “New America,” arguing that the new name would enhance the state’s prestige and value.
Trump made the suggestion in a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, October 19, 2026, insisting that the state should immediately adopt the proposed name.

“We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” Trump wrote, adding that the change would bring greater value and prestige to the state.
The proposal is a continuation of Trump’s earlier calls for the state to adopt a different name. In September, he shared posts and images suggesting that “Mexico” should be replaced with “America” in the state’s name.
However, the suggestion has faced opposition from political leaders in New Mexico, who argue that the state’s name reflects its history, culture and identity. Several elected officials have publicly rejected the proposal.
Trump’s proposal has also raised questions about presidential authority. The US president cannot unilaterally rename a state through an executive order. Such a change would require an appropriate legal and legislative process involving the state and Congress.
As of the latest reports, New Mexico remains the state’s official name, and no formal change has been approved.
