Nigerian world record holder Tobi Amusan has been confirmed to compete in the $2.1 million Athlos all-female track and field series in London and New York later this year.
Amusan, who holds the world record in the women’s 100m hurdles, will compete in her specialist event at both legs of the series. The London event is scheduled for September 18, while the New York edition will take place on October 2.
The organisers announced her participation on Wednesday, saying:
“The world record holder is coming to Athlos. Tobi is taking on what she does best, the 100m hurdles. Watch her compete this fall at ATHLOS LDN & NYC!”
Founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Athlos features seven events: the 100m hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, mile and long jump.
$2.1m Prize Pool
The series has a total prize purse of $2.1 million, with athletes eligible to earn up to $65,000 for winning an individual event and an additional $25,000 for becoming the overall champion.
Athletes will also receive equity in the league, giving them a potential financial stake in its future success.
Explaining the equity model, Ohanian said the cash rewards athletes for their participation and performances, while the equity is intended to make them partners in the growth of the competition.
The seven disciplines will be contested in both London and New York, with athletes accumulating points across the events to determine the overall winner.
An athlete who wins an individual event in both cities could earn up to $155,000, including the overall title bonus.
Amusan to Face Global Stars
Amusan will compete alongside several leading names in women’s athletics, including Sha’Carri Richardson, Gabby Thomas, Tara Woodhall-Davis, Masai Russell and Marileidy Paulino, who have also been confirmed for the series.
The competition will provide Amusan with another opportunity to test herself against some of the world’s best athletes ahead of the closing stages of the athletics season.
