President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renamed the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
The announcement was made during his Democracy Day broadcast on Friday, June 12, 2026, where the President described the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Tinubu said the renaming was part of efforts to honour individuals who played significant roles in shaping the country’s political history.
“Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence, the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity,” the President said.
He added that Yar’Adua’s legacy reflects national unity and democratic progress, noting his contributions to Nigeria’s political development.
“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu stated.
General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a former Chief of Staff of the Supreme Headquarters under General Olusegun Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979, played a major role in Nigeria’s first peaceful transition from military rule to civilian governance.
After retiring from the military, he founded the People’s Democratic Movement, which became influential in Nigeria’s political space. He was also a known critic of the Sani Abacha military regime and was later arrested on charges of treasonable felony. He died in prison in 1997 under controversial circumstances.
