At least three persons have been killed and one injured following a fresh attack in Nyamgo Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, barely 48 hours after the visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state.

The victims—identified as Luka Sandu Pam (36), Samuel Davou (38), and Deme Saidu (35)—were reportedly ambushed by assailants at about 7:00 p.m. on Friday while returning home from Gero on a motorbike. The incident, which occurred on Good Friday, has thrown the community into mourning.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were part of a group of about 15 youths returning from a mining site when they ran into the ambush. The Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, disclosed that the group came under sudden attack by suspected armed herdsmen, forcing them to flee.

“We started hearing sporadic gunshots and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed,” he said, urging authorities to take urgent action to halt what he described as repeated and unprovoked attacks on the community.

Also reacting, the Chairman of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, Barrister Solomon Dalyop, condemned the killings, describing them as a reflection of worsening insecurity in Plateau State. He noted that the victims had gone to observe Good Friday before they were attacked on their way home.

“These young men went to mark Good Friday and were returning home when they were ambushed and killed. This is heartbreaking,” Dalyop said.

He further revealed that community leaders had recently held a security meeting with members of the Fulani community at a Nigerian Army Sector 2 Command in Jos South, where concerns were raised about suspicious movements around Gero, Rafin Bauna, and Dutsen Kura in the Miyango-Bassa axis.

According to him, residents had been advised to remain vigilant, especially at night, following reports of unfamiliar individuals in the area.

Dalyop, however, warned that the situation could deteriorate further if decisive action is not taken, alleging that armed groups have taken over bushes in parts of the state. He also decried the inadequate security presence in the affected communities.

He noted that only police personnel responded after the attack, evacuating the injured victim to a nearby hospital.

Residents have since called for increased security deployment and heightened vigilance to prevent further attacks, as preparations begin for the burial of the deceased.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time. Meanwhile the community have gone ahead to conduct the burial of the three victims today.

The latest incident adds to a growing wave of violence in Plateau State, raising renewed concerns over the safety of residents and the effectiveness of ongoing security measures.
