Nigerian Afrobeats singer Simi, born Simisola Kosoko, has generated widespread reactions after calling for harsher penalties for rapists amid growing concern over sexual violence in Nigeria.

The singer made the remarks in a strongly worded post on X on Tuesday night, where she expressed frustration over recurring reports of sexual assault across the country and urged authorities and citizens to take decisive action to protect women.

In her post, Simi condemned sexual violence and argued that stronger deterrent measures were necessary, a stance that quickly sparked debate online. While some supported her outrage and call for justice for victims, others criticised her suggestion of extreme punishment and raised concerns about due process and false accusations.

Responding to the backlash, the singer clarified that her comments were driven by concern for survivors of sexual violence, insisting that the prevalence of abuse against women should not be downplayed because of fears about false claims.

She maintained that many women live in fear of harassment or assault both in public and private spaces, urging men to play a more active role in discouraging harmful behaviour and holding one another accountable.

Her comments have since fueled broader conversations on social media about gender-based violence, justice for survivors, and the responsibility of communities and institutions to ensure safety and accountability.
