A Montana teenager has discovered her long-lost biological sister in an unexpected way — after a teammate noticed that a player on the opposing softball team looked remarkably like her.
Samantha Rensvold, 19, had always known she was adopted and that she had a younger biological sister who had also been adopted. However, because the adoption was closed, she had no idea where her sister was or what she looked like.
The remarkable discovery happened during a softball tournament in Montana on August 1, 2025. Rensvold’s teammate, Hayley Hernandez, noticed that Kyann Dean, 18, who was playing for the opposing team, bore a striking resemblance to Rensvold. Hernandez also noticed similarities in the way the two girls played softball.
Rensvold initially dismissed the possibility that Dean could be her sister. After the game, however, she and her mother checked the tournament roster and noticed that the girl’s name was Kyann — the same name Rensvold’s biological mother had given her younger sister. Her mother immediately suspected that they had finally found the missing sibling.
The following time the two families met, their mothers compared details and discovered that the girls shared the same biological mother and had been born at the same hospital. Although the sisters have not undergone a DNA test, the information confirmed for them that they were siblings.
The discovery was particularly emotional for Rensvold, who said she had waited her whole life to meet her sister. “It’s like we didn’t know what to feel because you’ve waited your whole lives for this moment,” she said.
The sisters have since discovered several other similarities. Both played volleyball in high school as outside hitters, wore the same number and even share a similar laugh. They now attend colleges in different states but remain in contact and hope to spend more time together.
For Rensvold, the reunion has brought a sense of closure after years of wondering about the sister she knew existed but had never met.
