Tears as 16 Benue Attack Victims Buried in Mass Funeral

Sixteen people killed by armed attackers in Efeyo community, Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State have been laid to rest in a mass burial amid tears and grief.

The victims were killed on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, when armed assailants reportedly invaded the community at about 5 a.m. and opened fire on residents.

The mass funeral, held on Saturday, August 8, was attended by family members, community leaders, traditional rulers, politicians and religious leaders who gathered to pay their final respects to the deceased.

According to Daily Trust, many mourners struggled to hold back tears as the victims were buried side by side in graves prepared for the mass burial.

A resident of the community, Ogboji Aboje, described the funeral as one of the saddest moments in the history of Efeyo.

“The funeral was so touching. The atmosphere was full of sorrow. Tears were flowing. It was the saddest day for the people of Efeyo community. May their souls rest in peace,” he said.


A Catholic priest offered prayers for the deceased before the bodies, which were placed in white caskets, were lowered into their graves.

The mass burial brought renewed attention to the security concerns affecting communities in parts of Benue State, as residents continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones.
